C. Kramer Flute Headjoints – Where Craftsmanship Meets Innovation
In 2016, Bavarian flute maker Christoph Kramer joined forces with flutist André Salm to take on an unusual challenge: designing flute headjoints using brass tubing. Though rarely used today, brass was highly regarded by Theobald Böhm—the father of the modern flute—who believed that, after silver, it was one of the most suitable metals for crafting flutes.
After three years of meticulous research and development, the duo successfully launched their first series of headjoints, combining outstanding acoustic properties with a striking vintage aesthetic.
A Unique Look, A Distinctive Sound:
Each headjoint is crafted from raw, uncoated brass that naturally oxidizes over time, developing a rich patina reminiscent of aged wood. The range includes three different alloys, each offering its own tonal personality and distinct manufacturing process:
• Gms: red brass (95% copper / 5% zinc) – made from drawn tubing
• Rms: rose brass (85% copper / 15% zinc) – shaped from a solid metal sheet
• Cus: pure copper – made from drawn tubing
Every material is available with two taper and cut options, allowing players to select the level of resistance that best suits their playing style.
Innovative Acoustic Design:
• One of the most distinctive features of C. Kramer headjoints is the seamless integration of the lip plate and riser—molded from a single block of solid silver. This unique construction enhances articulation, improves response, and delivers a clearer attack.
• Another thoughtful innovation is the rubber tuning cork that replaces the traditional cork stopper. This solution preserves resonance and ensures more responsive playability.
• A weighted crown further enhances balance and feel in hand.
Discover a new sonic perspective. Try a C. Kramer headjoint and experience your flute like never before.
references:
• 2LRms - red brass, sterling riser and lipplate, straight taper delivers quicker response with less resistance, ideal for players seeking agility, ease of articulation, and a more direct feel.
• 1KRms - red brass, sterling riser and lipplate, wide taper offers greater resistance, providing enhanced control, a richer tone, and more nuanced dynamics.
